A Accessibility Configuration of the appearance of HeadCase for the convenience of disabled users, especially font sizes.
Analyst Tree The Windows Tree control found to the left of the HeadCase main window in the default installation.
Auto-Branch Option in HeadCase allowing new Branches to be added to a selected location every time the background is clicked.
B Branch A line drawn from one node to another to which text and pictures can be curved.
Background Those areas of the Mind Map® not occupied by HeadCase elements.
BOI "Basic Ordering Idea" - the main subjects, or main branches, that appear around the Mind Map's central image.
C Chain of Embellishment The order in which embellishments are layered on an element.
Clipboard The Windows buffer which contains data which has been cut and pasted.
Colour Button Button displaying the value of a colour property - opens a tabbed dialogue used to select colours.
Control point Location that can be dragged with the mouse to change the shape and/or size of an item.
Context menu Set of options that pops up when most items in HeadCase are clicked with the right [dextrous, as opposed to correct] mouse button.
Custom On the colour dialogue, signifies a coloured defined by the user using the RGB colour model.
D Default Installation The way HeadCase appears and behaves immediately it is first installed, before any plug-ins are added or features moved and resized.
Demote
Design The state in which a HeadCase Mind Map's® links are inactive and can be edited.
Distort To drag the shape of text or any other shape around and achieve a different shape, such as stretching or shearing.
Dock To anchor a window to its default position around the edges of the HeadCase main window.
Drag Moving an item by pressing the left mouse button and pulling the item about.
Drag handle Shape on the Mind Map®, usually a simple square or circle, used to move a control point by dragging.
Embellish Adding one item to another to enhance its appearance - the added item cannot be dragged around separately, rather it acts like part of the embellished item. An example is text on a Branch, which follows the curve of the branch and is tied to it.
Extensible Takes plug-ins which can enhance HeadCase's capabilities. Examples are the different Branch and recurve shapes, which can be added to by other programmers.
External Document A document which is started in a new process when the HeadCase element to which it is linked is double-clicked.
F Faded Fill A graduated change from one colour to another drawn within the outline of a shape.
Favourites On the colour dialogue, signifies a set of user-defined colours which can be cached and reused later.
Fill A coloured pattern or texture drawn within the outline of a shape.
Fill colour The solid colour used to fill in a shape. Can be transparent.
Font A set of shapes that define how text appears. Also called "Typeface".
Footnote Text that appears on the "Footnote" tab when an item is clicked - can be edited by the user so that Branches and other items can have extended text attached.
Free-standing Refers to a Picture or Text Block that is not curved to fit a Branch and can be dragged about as a separate block.
G Grab handle A shape that appears on a Mind Map® when an element is selected to show where the mouse can be clicked to alter its shape.
H HeadCase
  • Pejorative describing the author of this application by the time of the first release.
  • The name of the only hand-drawn Mind Mapping® application.
L Link
  • General term for any linear feature joiing one component on a HeadCase Mind Map® to any other.
  • Connection of a Branch or other feature in a HeadCase Mind Map® to a document or plug-in that is loaded and displayed when the feature is selected.
Linked Document A document which appears in the Link tab or as a full-screen window when the HeadCase element to which it is linked is clicked.
Live The state in which a HeadCase Mind Map's® links are active.
Locked The state in which a HeadCase Mind Map cannot be edited.

Mnemonic A general term for techniques used to enhance memory..
Monitor
  • Large, predatory lizard.
  • Eejit responsible for provision of chalk.
  • Big square glowing thing containing this dat you be readin'.
Multi-Branch HeadCase operation adding a number of Branches in a single action.
N Node The join at either end of a Branch, to which Branches can be added.
O Outline A line traced around a shape. An example would be a line drawn around some text to enhance its appearance.
Option Button Part of a group of buttons selecting one of a group of values.
Options Group A set of options buttons within a rectangular frame, from which only one can be selected.
P Picture A rectangular item containing a picture loaded from a file, which can currently only be free-standing.
Plug-in Component which can be added to HeadCase to enhance its capabilities. Programmed by software developers using Microsoft's ActiveX technology.
Promote To change the order of an embellishment so that it now embellishes the item that was previously embellishing it.
R Recent On the colour dialogue, signifies the most recently used user-defined colours.
Recurve New shape applied to a Branch and curved to fit its path, such as an arrow.
RGB Additive colour model defining colours in terms of red, green and blue values from 0 to 255.
S Shape
  • Any area on a Mind Map® that has an outline. Mainly refers to text, which has an outline that can be filled and outlined.
  • Property selecting different routes for Branches.
Sibling Item that shares the same parent.
Spin button A group of controls used to change a numeric value, comprising a label, text field and up- and down-buttons to change the value.
Standard On the colour dialogue, signifies one of a small set of primary and other basic colours.
T Text Block A piece of written text which can be curved to fit a Branch or left free-standing.
Textured Fill A repeated pattern drawn within the outline of a shape.
Tip / Tool Tip Pop-up hint that appears when the mouse pointer loiters over an item.
Tools Button Button with a spanner icon found to the right of all properties tabs in the SmartAce level version of HeadCase. Opens a menu which allows properties to be hidden or displayed to allow simplification of the user interface.
Toolbar The rectangular space at the top of the default installation of HeadCase containing control buttons.
Typeface See "Font".
U UI "User interface" - the aggregate set of features through which one interacts with HeadCase.
Undock To remove a window from its default position around the edges of the HeadCase main window and allow it to float freely and be resized in all directions.
Unembellish To remove an embellishment from the item it is embellishing - the removed item is deleted.
URL "Universal Resource Locator". Text value indicating the location of a document anywhere in the Universe.
W Widget A plug-in which adds some visible component to the HeadCase user interface.
Z Zoom To change the scaling of the Mind Map® to show more detail ("Zoom in") or more of the Mind Map® ("Zoom out").
