Adding new branches

There are a variety of ways to insert branches :

Insert and Ctrl-Insert

Pressing the Insert key adds a new branch at the same level as the current branch, if a branch is selected. If a node is selected, a new branch is inserted as a child of the current node . If some other element is selected, such as a picture or free-standing text block , HeadCase searches back up the hierarchy for a node and adds a child branch to the first node found. Pressing the Insert key while depressing the Control alters the level at which a new branch is added when a branch is selected. If a branch is selected, the new branch is then added as a child of the current branch.

On the Properties tab for each Text Block, accessed by clicking the "Plain Text" tab in the Tools Window, is an Edit Box where more deeply nested embellishing Text Blocks can be edited.

A further aid to editing Text Blocks is found in Design Mode. To enter Design Mode, select the menu item View ... Design (Ctrl-D). When a Text Block, is selected for editing in Design Mode, an edit box and caret appear to indicate the status of your editing. This appears as an outline around the text and a blue highlight beneath the text selection, just like in an Edit Box. A flashing caret indicates the point at which letters are being typed in.

Stretching and Distorting text

The Properties tab for Text Blocks contains an item labelled Allow Distort. When this item displays a green check mark, distortion is enabled for the Text Block selected. Click the item to check and uncheck it. When distortion is enabled, the selected Text Block displays an extra set of grab handles. If the Text Block is free-standing, it displays eight grab handles. Four are arranged at the corners of the area occupied by the text. Four are positioned between each adjacent pair of corners. The grab handles at the corners can be moved around freely by dragging with the left mouse button. The remaining four serve to drag both points adjacent to them. For instance, the Text Block can be stretched vertically in a single operation by dragging the top/middle drab handle upwards.

If the Text Block is embellishing a branch, eight grab handles again appear. Four of these represent the curve of the branch, while four of these represent the curve of the top of the Text Block. The Text Block. is stretched to fit between the curve of the branch and the curve of an imaginary branch along its top.

Using Clip Art

TBD

Using the extended clipboard

HeadCase features an extended clipboard, shown on the analyst tree to the left of the screen in the default setup. Each cut, copy, paste and delete operation is logged in the analyst tree, as seen here. A date/time stamp and caption, where appropriate, is included to help locate the item in question.

Items which have been deleted or manipulated using the clipboard during the current session can be retrieved from the tree by double-clicking the item with the left mouse button, or by selecting the item in the tree and hitting enter. The capacity to drag-and-drop items is also planned for the full release.
